On November 4, six students and five faculty represented HJH at a dinner in honor of best-selling author Rick Riordan in Wichita Falls. The students earned the privilege of attending the dinner by being the top two readers in their grade level. Riordan, author of the popular Percy Jackson series, spoke to the audience about how he started writing and what made him decide to wrote children's books. A former teacher, Mr. Riordan began writing down stories he told to his son about Greek Mythology and used his classes as critics after beginning a writing hobby for adult books previously. He mentioned plans for the final Percy Jackson book to be released in May, 2009, and a movie is scheduled to come out based on his series in 2010. Riordan has also written the first book in the series, The 39 Clues, which uses books and online games to solve a mystery. That book has also been scheduled to become the basis of a movie in the near future as well! Afterwards, he met with students and autographed books for them.
Congratulations to Sara, Jameson, Les, Crystal, Jessica, and Parker for being the top readers! They were accompanied to the dinner by Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Story, Mrs. Bachman, Mrs. Anthony, and Mrs. Barry.
