Children spend a great amount of time in an educational setting. I believe that there are many things they require from this educational setting. Therefore, the purpose of the school, as I see it, is to meet each student’s individual needs so he/she can become his/her ultimate self. This may mean meeting students’ emotional, social, physical, academic, moral, or psychological needs. It could mean meeting students’ needs for attention or affection. It might be any one of these things, but more likely, it is a combination of many of them. This can only be determined by building a relationship with each child and meeting them where they are.
Building relationships increases the success of student learning. Students are more highly motivated when they care about the person they are working with, but more importantly, when they know the person they are working with cares about them. Consequently, effective teaching occurs when students know their teacher’s expectations of them. They understand that they are in a partnership with their teacher, and the level of their learning is dependent on a shared responsibility between the two. In this case, learning becomes an active mission that students have some control over, rather than an occurrence in which they are passive participants.
