Chromebook Troubleshooting

Here are a few tips and tricks that can solve a lot of Chromebook issues. You are welcome and encouraged to put in a help ticket. But these are things that you can try if you are in a bind to get the Chromebook back online before your ticket is answered.

Battery Won't Charge

First, check that:

  • The charger or adapter cables are completely plugged in, both to your Chromebook and the wall.

  • The power outlet is working.

If your Chromebook still won't charge:

  1. Unplug your charger from the wall and your Chromebook.

  2. Plug your charger back in to your Chromebook, then the wall.

  3. Charge the device for at least 30 minutes.

If the battery still won't charge, reset your Chromebook hardware

Screen Stays Black

1. Press and hold “Refresh” key (half circle arrow above 4 ) + tap Power 
2. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh 

Turn On/Off Accessibility Features

Step 1: Find accessibility features 

1. At the bottom right, select the time. Or press Alt + Shift + s 
2. Select Settings  
3. At the bottom, select Advanced 
4. In the "Accessibility" section, select Manage accessibility feature. Optional: To have quick access to accessibility features, turn on Always show accessibility options in the system menu. 

Step 2: Turn on or off a feature Choose the accessibility features you'd like to use: 

● Text-to-speech: Turn on the screen reader or Select-to-speak. 
● Display: Turn on high contrast mode or screen magnifier, or change screen resolution or text size. 
● Keyboard: Turn on sticky keys, on-screen keyboard, keyboard focus highlighting, keyboard repeat rate, or word prediction. Learn how to type with your voice. 
● Mouse and touchpad: Turn on navigation buttons in tablet mode, automatic clicking, tap dragging, cursor highlighting, or change the cursor's size. 
● Audio: Play all sounds together through all speakers or play sound on startup 

Hard Reset

To perform a hard Reset on Your Chromebook

  1. Save and close all application windows

  2. Power off your Chromebook by either holding down the power button then selecting "Power Off" or selecting the System Tray in the bottom left corner of the screen and selecting the power button.

  3. Press and hold Refresh (circular arrow key above the 4) + tap Power.

  4. When your Chromebook completely starts up, release Refresh.

Powerwash

1. Sign out of your Chromebook 
2. Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r 
3. Select Restart 
4. In the box that appears, select Powerwash Continue
5. Log into the guest wifi 
6. Follow the steps that appear

Can't Access testing Apps?

These apps should be installed. The way to get to it is to first LOG OUT of your chromebook. Then, when you click on Apps, you should see:
Riverside Data Manager
Secure Test Browser
TestNav
NWEA Secure Testing

Things to try:

  1. No really, did you LOG OUT of your chromebook?

  2. Restart your machine / Check Again
